Before, I go any further, I’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to you and all the generous supporters of free speech who rallied to my defence in the recent successful efforts by the League for Human Rights of B’nai Brith to have me fired by the Peel Board of Education. So many of you sent money to help with my defence. So many of you, on both sides of the border, sent letters to the Peel Board of Education standing up for free speech. The Peel Board, who seems willing to do the bidding of Communist Party hatchetman David “Bare Bum” Lethbridge and the censorship crew at B’nai Brith, knows they were in a real fight. And the fight is not over!

Defending Free Speech Costs

So severely is freedom of speech under attack in this country that now those of us who are defending those whose freedoms have been taken away, now find ourselves under attack. So frightened and arrogant are thought control freaks and the minority censors that they are flailing out in all directions. Ten years ago, it was those with controversial ideas who were being gagged — Ernst Zundel, Malcolm Ross, John Ross Taylor. Today, it is those who defended people with controversial ideas who are under attack. The fearless journalist and World War II hero Doug Collins is being dragged before the B.C. Human Rights Commission. Lawyer Doug Christie, “counsel for the damned”, ispublicly trashed by the smear artists of B’nai Brith. And, of course, I was fired. One of the reasons given was my defence of those who have come under attack.

Yes, the free speech movement is not for the feint of heart!

An Action Plan for Freedom of Speech

First, the Internet. The Canadian Association for Free Expression has had a webpage for the past year [http://cafe.canadafirst.cdmail.biz]. We keep adding to it and have included some excellent photo displays. We know the enemies of free speech are furious. Frank Dimant of B’nai Brith told the Toronto Star (March 8, 1997): “‘Such well-known names in the hate movement as Ernst Zundel, Paul Fromm and Doug Christie have established sites on the World Wide Web that are updated regularly to disseminate their propaganda …'” The Internet permits us to speak to people directly, without the censorship, labelling and exclusion that so often occurs in the establishment media. We need your help to fund a major improvement and upgrading of our webpage.

Secondly, more meetings. Thanks to the censors, while I work out an alternative source of income, I have embarked on a series of meetings and media contacts across this country. I am focusing attention on my own case, which, as Rochelle Wilner of B’nai Brith said, is “an important precedent.” The censors can now fire teachers for questioning the New World Order creed of multicult. In the past few weeks, I received an extremely good reception on open line shows in Calgary (CHED), London (1290 CJBK) and St. Catharines (CKTB). More meeitngs and much more media outreach is planned for the next few months. These meetings cost money. We are not always able to recoup the cost from the collection. Thus, I must call on your aasistance to help fund a much expanded programme to bring the free speech issue before the public.

Thirdly, would you organize a meeting? If you would like me to talk in your community — either in a private home or a meeting hall — I would be happy to come, if we can arrange funding to cover the cost of travel. If you would be willing to help organize a meeting, please let us know as soon as possible.

So, to conclude: please, send in your subscription ($15) to 1997 to the Free Speech Monitor and your contribution to help our Free Speech Action Plan, which includes improving our Internet webpage and our meeting/media outreach programme.

All donors will receive a colour picture of one of the heros/heroines of the free speech movement in Canada.

Sincerely yours,

Paul Fromm, Director
